Quarantine Chronicles: Frog Week

Over here, frogs are a big topic of conversation. Naturally, “Frog Week” was such a big hit they didn’t even realize how much they learned. From life cycles to habitats, we covered our little amphibious friends through a multiple platforms.

Here’s what we used for preschool – first grade:

English – I found this Frog Catcher Game from Homeschooling My Kinetic Kids. Though, we didn’t use it in the intended way, I taped letters to darts and had the boys use them to target the corresponding letter. Just a fun way to mix it up. There is also this fun word search from the Froglife organization.

Math – An idea I had that was developed from the sidewalk calculator, was the “Sidewalk Frog Hop”. I hand drew lily pads and inserted numbers in them. From there I had a set of questions geared toward each child. Find number 1-10, what is 2 + 5, etc.

Science – There were a few topics we covered. First, the life cycle of a frog was illustrated wonderfully on The Dr. Binocs Show. If you’re looking for something more catchy, check out this Frog Song by Coco Melon.

Teach the frog life cycle in a fun with with these Play-Doh mats by Pre-K Pages. Or with this life cycle wheel by Kindergarten Pages.

The next time your child asks, “why don’t frogs freeze in winter?”, try this experiment from Play-Doh to Plato.

What’s an Amphibian? HomeschoolPop made a great video explaining it.

Frog or Toad? Here are some videos from SciShowKids that explains the differences and some fun tips on how to spot them!

Art – We made two frog themed projects. The first was the Frog Plate – which consisted of painting a paper plate, gluing on eyes and tongues.

The second was Frog Puppets which we made with paper lunch bags. Then added googly eyes, free cut hands, and glued tongues in the flap. They were a fun and a form of entertainment for a day or two.

Finally, and probably the most favorite activity, we completed a nature scavenger hunt and created our own frog habitat. We even found some frogs to join us!
